Stories Seen and Heard, woven art, 2025

Stories Seen and Heard

This softly cascading, reflective curtain is woven from VHS and cassette tapes, repurposed as sculptural material. The work functions as a generational archive, assembled from the artist’s own collection as well as contributions from friends and family. The tapes preserve favourite television series, cartoons, and recordings of family celebrations such as weddings and communions, while the audio cassettes contain music compilations taped from radio broadcasts.

By interlacing these media, the artist evokes the social rituals once accompanying the practices of borrowing, listening, and collective viewing. Designed as a gleaming pane, the installation produces both a mesmerising surface and an encrypted code – legible only with obsolete tools – while simultaneously withholding access to its contents
